Space 24

Space 24 is an outdoor public space which is open to the public 24 hours a day in downtown Los Angeles. Currently, the area of parking spaces clearly doubles and possibly triples the area of public space. This space is planned for the incredibly diverse population of Los Angeles: from children to the elderly, the business man to the homeless man, the Asians to the African American. By converting a massive parking lot into a multifunctional space that can still acommodate parking, space 24 seeks to bring a range of people to this site.

The program:
1) Jogging path + Stretching Zone
2) Rest pods/shelters
3) Outdoor seating
4) Semi indoor/outdoor restaurant + bar
5) Informal performance/exhibit spaces
6) Parking lot

Shani-

Looks like you have an interesting site, and one with which you are familiar.

Next step, is that you need to connect with a Design Thesis Advisor and select one or two Readers:

1) Advisor generally needs to be a member of the Department of Architecture

2) If your thesis supervisor is not a member of the Dept. of Architecture, you must also choose a faculty reader within Course 4 who will work in conjunction with your supervisor and be responsible for your final grade.

3) Ideal to choose someone as Advisor with whom you have worked with in a pervious design studio. They know you and you know them. This should help in both understanding what to expect in the interaction.

4) You will want someone who is available to meet with you at least once a week for an hour or so. This is important.

5) Your readers should be folks that can offer something beyond the Advisor. Try not to select another designer, but rather an expert in a topic related to your thesis topic, or a friend who can assist in big picture things, or the research end, or the writing end.

6) Be very careful not to get caught between Advisor and Reader, where each has a different view of what your thesis should be. They need to support you, not direct you!

7) Your comfort with your advisor is very important.

8) Ideally, you might want an Architect and Landscape Architect supporting you, as well as a sociologist/urban planner. Or and industrial designer…

I hope this helps.

Otherwise, please take a pass at the assignment for this Thursday. You need to provide a complete description of your project and intended process. This will be useful for conversations with your potential readers and advisor. Send them to your blog postings.

Best, Alan
